The Challenge
- Following the 2014 oil price crash to ~$30/bbl, the company launched an aggressive cost reduction initiative targeting a 20% reduction in OPEX, from $7.40/bbl to $6.00/bbl.
The Leadership & Approach
As Chief Procurement Officer, Hendrik Snyman stepped up to lead as Chief Transformation Officer. While many expected savings solely from squeezing third-party suppliers, the program delivered through three equal levers:
- Third-party suppliers;
- Specifications optimization;
- Process improvements.
The Results
- Achieved $5.00/bbl OPEX (exceeding the target);
- Generated $1 billion in total savings across OPEX, Sustaining Capex, and Capex;
- Of which $600 million was recurring and sustained long-term.
